Art talk: We bring Edvard Munch to you

For those of you who cannot visit the museum this summer, we invite you to join us for a conversation and a closer look at some of the works on display in our two current exhibitions: “The Experimental Self - Edvard Munch’s Photography” and “Yonder - Edvard Munch and Nature”.

In Munch's time, as in ours, anxieties about illness and illnesses themselves spread through densely populated cities. Many people sought renewal and recreation at the coast and in nature where bathing and physical activities promised health and strength. Munch travelled to Åsgårdstrand and Warnemünde where he photographed and painted himself, friends, and models. His activities were part of a wide-spread Reform movement that sought the sun, leaving the sickness and contamination in the city behind.

For dere som ikke kan besøke museet i sommer, inviterer vi til en samtale og et nærblikk på noen av verkene som er utstilt i våre to utstillinger: ”Det eksperimentelle selvet - Edvard Munchs fotografier” og ”På vei ut - Edvard Munch og naturen”. 

I Munchs tid, som nå, spredte angsten for sykdom og selve sykdommen seg gjennom tett befolkede byer. Mange søkte fornying og friluft ved kysten og i naturen hvor bading og fysisk aktivitet lovet helse og styrke. Munch reiste til Åsgårdstrand og Warnemünde, hvor han fotograferte og malte seg selv, venner og modeller. Hans aktiviteter var en del av en populær reformbevegelse som søkte solen, og forlot byens sykdom og smitte.
